Overview
Geotechnical engineering is the foundation upon which successful and durable projects are built. At Blackmore and Associates, our geotechnical engineering services provide a critical understanding of subsurface conditions so that development decisions are grounded in data—not assumptions. Based in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, our firm brings extensive experience working with the varied soil, rock, and groundwater conditions common throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and the surrounding regions.
Our geotechnical team evaluates subsurface conditions to identify risks, confirm design assumptions, and develop practical recommendations for site development and structural support. By understanding how soil and rock will behave under load and over time, we help owners, engineers, and contractors reduce uncertainty, control construction costs, and avoid costly delays or failures.
We collaborate closely with civil engineers, structural engineers, architects, and contractors to ensure that geotechnical findings are clearly communicated and seamlessly integrated into the overall project design.

Local Experience Matters
The geology of the Pottstown area and greater Montgomery, Chester, and Berks County regions presents unique challenges, including variable fill conditions, residual soils, shallow bedrock, karst features, and seasonal groundwater fluctuations. Blackmore and Associates has deep familiarity with these local conditions, local municipal review requirements, and PennDOT standards when applicable. This regional expertise allows us to anticipate subsurface challenges early and provide recommendations that are realistic, constructible, and code-compliant.
Our Geotechnical Engineering Services
Blackmore and Associates offers a full range of geotechnical engineering services to support projects from early site evaluation through construction.
Site Evaluations and Subsurface Investigations
We perform comprehensive subsurface investigations to characterize soil, rock, and groundwater conditions. These evaluations may include test borings, soil sampling, in-situ testing, and laboratory analysis to determine bearing capacity, settlement potential, and overall site suitability for development.
Foundation Design Recommendations
Based on subsurface findings, we provide engineering recommendations for shallow and deep foundations, including spread footings, mat foundations, drilled piers, and piles. Our designs account for loading conditions, soil behavior, groundwater presence, and long-term performance to ensure safe and economical foundation systems.
Groundwater Analysis and Risk Mitigation
Groundwater can significantly impact construction methods and long-term structural performance. We evaluate groundwater levels, seasonal fluctuations, and drainage conditions, and provide recommendations for dewatering, waterproofing, and foundation protection as needed.
Slope Stability and Earthwork Analysis
For sites with grade changes, embankments, or retaining structures, we analyze slope stability and soil strength to minimize the risk of failure or excessive movement. We provide recommendations for earthwork, retaining wall design parameters, and erosion control measures.
Liquefaction and Specialty Analyses
When required, we perform soil liquefaction assessments and other specialty geotechnical evaluations to address seismic considerations, soft soils, or unusual subsurface conditions. These analyses help identify potential risks and guide appropriate mitigation strategies.
Construction Support and Observation
Our services extend into the construction phase, where we provide field observation, testing, and verification to ensure that geotechnical recommendations are properly implemented. This includes footing inspections, compaction testing, and coordination with contractors to address site conditions as they arise.

Featured Project
Stonebrook at Upper Merion
This 75 acre residential development involved an existing property that presented a unique variety of geotechnical challenges. Ranging from deep deposits of highly compressible residual agricultural lime production spoils to very deep deposits of variegated existing fill materials from the parcels 40 plus year use by a major heavy & highway contractor. Due to the variable soil properties at the site several ground improvement techniques were required to prepare the site for the planned development. These techniques included a wick drain aided surcharge program, dynamic compaction, soil replacement and semi-rigid settlement control inclusions.
Our geotechnical engineers performed an extensive site exploration including standard test borings and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) survey to delineate soft/loose areas at the property. Based on the depth and soil properties within these soft/loose zones they were selected for various ground improvement methods.
Approximately 30 acres of highly compressible silts were stabilized through the installation of wick drains and installing a surcharge stockpile which successfully consolidated these silts providing the opportunity to construct 65 single family homes and associated access roadways and utilities. Approximately 45 acres of deep variegated fill with a variable strength profile was stabilized through a dynamic compaction program, soil replacement or through the implementation of settlement control ground improvement techniques to ensure the stability of the foundations and avoid potential settlement-related issues. This provided the opportunity to construct 213 townhouse units.

A Practical, Client-Focused Approach
At Blackmore and Associates, our goal is not to overcomplicate geotechnical engineering, but to make it actionable. We pride ourselves on clear reporting, responsive communication, and recommendations that can be confidently used by design teams and contractors. By identifying risks early and offering practical solutions, we help our clients move forward with confidence and build on solid ground.
